Between the Panels to Help Support Autism Walk!

We are happy to announce today that Between the Panels will join with friend of the show Kim Jordan, to raise money for The 2010 Walk Now for Autism Speaks! This weekend, Dane and I will record a special review of Kick-Ass, and for every download of this episode, Dane and I will contribue $.10 for every single episode downloaded! Here’s what Kim has to say about the importance of the walk:

By participating in this event, you are helping to change the future for all who struggle with autism. By walking, you are getting us one step closer to finding what causes autism, how to prevent and treat it, and ultimately a cure so no family ever hears those words again. Until then, we walk to find answers and raise awareness about the devastating toll that autism has had on families like ours.

By downloading this episode, you are contributing to an amazing cause. The episode will be posted later this weekend, and will be a review of both the Kick-Ass comic book, and the Kick-Ass movie. I’m very glad to be a part of this and I hope you’ll download the episode and spread the word for this amazing cause! If you want to donate now, check out this link!

Comic News Round-Up for 4/15/10

Since I’m a couple of days behind on news, here’s a quick burst of news for you all:

  • The great folks over at the CBR forums found a teaser with the full lineup for the Secret Avengers (Steve Rogers, Moon Knight, Valkriye, War Machine, Beast, and Nova). However, Brubaker tweeted that there are still 3 members of the team that haven’t been unveiled yet.
  • Steve Rogers has his love interest in the form of actress Hayley Atwell.
  • Batwoman will finally get on-going series with JH William co-writing it along with W. Haden Blackman (an established writer in the Star Wars literary world). Williams will draw the first arc, and continue as a writer when Madame Xanadu’s Amy Reeder takes over on the second arc for art duties.
  • A new mini series from Dan Jurgens called Time Masters: Vanishing Point, will see Booster Gold and Rex Hunter team up with Superman and Green Lantern as they all go on the hunt for Bruce Wayne.
  • Geoff Johns and Andy Kubert will team to write a Flash event in 2011 called ‘Flashpoint’. iFanboy has a pretty good write up on the teaser featured in the back of this week’s ‘Flash #1′.
  • Don Kramer will join JMS as the artist on Wonder Woman starting with issue #601. The first arc will deal with the destruction of Paradise Island.

That’s a lot to take in one sitting, but now you’re all caught up!

Whedon in “Final Talks” to Direct ‘Avengers’ Movie

Arguably one of the biggest names in the geek world is now in current talks to direct Marvel’s Avengers movie. Joss Whedon, the creator of Firefly, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and Dollhouse is apparently the front runner to direct Robert Downey Jr, Chris Evans, and Chris Helmsworth in the upcoming super hero team epic.  Slashfilm reported on the story, and offered this point in discussion of Whedon:

Whedon is a ballsy choice, but will the identity of the director really matter from the perspective of the mainstream? Probably not. A great many people won’t think ‘this movie is from the guy behind Buffy and Firefly and that movie Serenity.’ They’ll hopefully think, ‘holy shit, this movie has Iron Man and Thor and Captain America? I’m so in!’ Making the film look like a good prospect has a lot more to do with the success of Thor and Captain America than it does the choice of director.

Slashfilm pretty much nails it. Whedon would certainly bring a vast amount of geek credibility to the film, but when you’ve got actors like Helmsworth, Evans, and Downey playing the most iconic Marvel characters, you really don’t need much more then that. Still, this has the potential to be VERY interesting, and could be a huge break for Whedon, who already has one of the most loyal fanbases in Television history. Regardless, we’ll be keeping a eye on this one folks.

Also, HUGE kudos to the great folks over at IESB who first ran a story about Whedon and the Avengers movie on April Fool’s Day, and were thought to be crying wolf. Congrats on the initial call guys.
