James McAvoy to Play Professor X in ‘X-Men: First Class’

In a surprise announcement this evening, the HeatVision Blog over at The Hollywood Reporter has an exclusive on the first casting news on Fox’s upcoming ‘X-Men: First Class’.  ”Wanted” alum James McAvoy will be playing a younger Professor X aka Charles Xavier. The movie will be directed by Matthew Vaughn of ‘Kick-Ass’ fame and has a release date of June 3, 2011.  According to Fox the story will be as follows:

“X-Men: First Class charts the epic beginning of the X-Men saga. Before Charles Xavier and Eric Lensherr took the names Professor X and Magneto, they were two young men discovering their powers for the first time. Before they were archenemies, they were the closest of friends, working together, with other Mutants (some familiar, some new), to stop the greatest threat the world has ever known. In the process, a rift between them opened, which began the eternal war between Magneto’s Brotherhood and Professor X’s X-Men.”

Tommy Lee Jones joins “Captain America” Cast

While Dane and I aren’t quite sold on the script side of the upcoming Captain America movie, we have been incredibly impressed with the casting decisions and the report out of Slashfilm today makes me excited for what’s to come.  Actress Hayley Atwell confirmed in an interview this week that Jones had joined the cast, but didn’t give an insight as to the role he’d be playing.  However, convental Internet wisdom has it that he’ll be playing General Chester Philips.  General Phillips is the man that is responsible for picking Steve Rogers to be the first test subject for the Super Solider Serum, which turns Steve into the American icon that is Captain America.  It sounds like Jones’ role might be small, but I’m excited to see what he’ll bring to the screen.
