Zach Synder’s Superman film officially has a title and a villain for Henry Cavill‘s Superman to face off against. Warner Bros. announced on Sunday that Academy Award nominee Michael Shannon will join the newly coined Man of Steel as General Zod. The Kryptonian general’s last film appearance was in Richard Donner’s Superman II. Since then, he’s had a significant role in Superman comics, recently playing a major role in Geoff JohnsAction Comics run.

“Zod is not only one of Superman’s most formidable enemies, but one of the most significant because he has insights into Superman that others don’t,” said Synder. ” Michael is a powerful actor who can project both the intelligence and the malice of the character, making him perfect for the role.”

Shannon’s acting prowess has controlled the screen whenever he appears in HBO’s Boardwalk Empire. The actor received a Best Supporting Actor nomination in 2008 for his role in Revolution Road alongside Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet.

Man of Steel is directed by Synder and stars Henry Cavill, Amy Adams, Michael Shannon, Diane Lane and Kevin Costner with a story written by David Goyer.

I’ve only seen a bit of Boardwalk Empire, but Shannon proved that he’s capable of villainy needed for General Zod. What do you think about Shannon’s casting? Sound off in our comments.
