I am of course talking of “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World.” When I first saw the trailer to this movie many months ago, I immediately became very very excited to see this film. I have enjoyed the director Edgar Wright’s past two films (“Shaun of the Dead” & “Hot Fuzz”) immensely and I’ve been a fan of Michael Cera since he was on “Arrested Development,” so I definitely thought that film could hold up to it’s tagline “An epic of epic epicness.”

Well, a few weeks ago, I traveled to San Diego Comic-Con, and while there I was surrounded by promotion for Scott Pilgrim. The Scott Pilgrim Experience they held at Comic Con was amazing, being able to preview the soundtrack, get a free t-shirt made, meet Bryan Lee O’Malley, make a pretty cool flipbook with Cory & Dane, and test out the demo of the video game. Later that same day, Dane and I decided to go and get in line for an advance screening they were holding for the film. The waiting was a bad experience (sunburn and bad line management), but once we got inside the theater, all was forgotten.

Continue to read my review after the jump!

Edgar Wright walked out and talked about making the film and then introduced the entire cast (in his words “minus Captain America & Superman”). Then the film began, and three minutes into the film, you could already tell this movie was going to be something special. Watching it for the first time that night, all the visual splendor of the movie felt like it had kicked my eyes in the groin, but in a good way. The way the film is shot and edited together, combined with the visual effects, makes for a truly unique experience, and one that will probably be imitated in the future. The soundtrack of the film is another highlight — you’ll find yourself tapping your foot the entire time you’re watching.

The entire cast in the film is phenomenal as well. Michael Cera pulls off a pitch perfect Scott Pilgrim and Kieran Culkin is outstanding as Wallace Wells. The standouts among the seven evil-exes though are definitely Chris Evans as Lucas Lee, Brandon Routh as Todd Ingram, and Jason Schwartzman as Gideon Graves.

When I saw the film the first time, I had only finished volume 1 of the graphic novels. If you still haven’t read any of the graphic novels before you see the film, that’s fine, because you’ll still be able to enjoy it. Just make sure after you see it that you go out and buy all six volumes, because they’re epic as well.

Last night I saw the film for a second time, and I thought it was an even better film upon that second viewing. I noticed so much more and was still in awe at all the amazing visuals that the film pumps into your eyes. This film is definitely a huge game changer in the film industry, for I cannot remember seeing another film that can even compare to what this film is. So, in closing, this is yet another masterpiece from director Edgar Wright and most likely the most faithful graphic novel to film adaptation ever. Go see the film twice this weekend — no, actually, thrice. I assure you that you will not be disappointed.

The Scott Pilgrim downloadable video game was released August 10th to the PlayStation Network ($9.99) and will be released on August 25th to XBOX Live .

Here is a short description of the gameplay:

Loosely following the plot of the graphic novels, up to four players can play as Scott Pilgrim, Ramona Flowers, Stephen Stills or Kim Pine, who must battle through several levels in order to defeat Ramona’s seven evil exes. Characters have their own individual movesets, which can be expanded upon by gaining enough experience, and are also able to use weapons and summon Knives Chau to assist them. During co-operative play, certain actions can be performed such as simultaneously taunting to defeat enemies or reviving fallen comrades before they lose a life. Defeating enemies earns coins which can be spent on health items or attribute boosts. Players can also enter Subspace areas which act as bonus areas where extra coins can be earned. There is also a cheat code that, when entered on the title screen, will unlock a zombie survival mode.

Check out my review after the jump…

I was excited to finally be able to download “Scott Pilgrim vs The World” yesterday after seeing multiple trailers for the game as well as playing a demo at Comic Con. The game is a must buy for anyone that is a fan of the comics or the upcoming film. It has a very cool looking 16-bit style as well as an amazing soundtrack. The gameplay is done in a classic beat’em up style that is very reminiscent of old NES games like Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II.

Sadly, the game is not perfect. Two of its biggest problems are that there is no online multiplayer and that the difficulty is so flipping high that sometime it’s nearly impossible to play through a level on your own. If you do decide to play with friends you will have to restart the level as there is no drop-in/drop-out feature. Lastly, while the game does have a save feature, it won’t allow you to save until you have beaten the level. This can be a tad frustrating if you die near the end of a particularly difficult level.

It’s a lot of fun and the lack of online play, high difficulty setting, and multiplayer issues are the only things that keep me from giving it a perfect score.

3.5/5 stars

In Superman/Shazam! The Return of Black Adam, Clark Kent’s latest interview subject is street kid Billy Batson. What Clark doesn’t know is that Billy is more than a feisty kid with a lot of heart – he has been chosen by an ancient wizard to represent the good of man as the World’s Mightiest Mortal just by invoking the name of the wizard, “Shazam!” Billy’s powers come none-too-soon, as he also discovers he’s being pursued by a centuries’ old, murderous villain, Black Adam – a foe so powerful, even Superman can’t stop him alone. The all-star cast of Superman/Shazam!
Jonah Hex – The tough-as-nails bounty hunter always gets his man – until someone else gets to him first – in this case a murderous madam who wants to steal more than just his bounty from Jonah Hex. Based on a story from the award-winning Jonah Hex comic series, and scripted by world-renowned author Joe Lansdale. The voice cast is led by Thomas Jane (Hung), Linda Hamilton (The Terminator), Michelle Trachtenberg (Mercy, Buffy the Vampire Slayer) and Michael Rooker (Days of Thunder).

Green Arrow – At the Star City International Airport to pick up his girlfriend, Oliver Queen is forced into action as Green Arrow to protect the 10-year-old Princess of Vlatava from his old nemesis Merlyn the Magnificent and the League of Assassins. Greg Weisman (Young Justice) pens this action-packed tale, which features the voices of Neal McDonough (Desperate Housewives) as the title character and Malcolm McDowell (Entourage) as his foe.

“The DC Showcase once again combines the respective creative talents of DC Comics, Warner Premiere, Warner Bros.
“Whereas DC Universe films have given fans the broad strokes of superhero entertainment, we know devout comics fans will enjoy seeing the characters in the DC Showcase come to animated life – some for the very first time – and we believe this presentation will open a window for new viewers to experience these unique, textured heroes and villains,” said Amit Desai, WHV Vice President of Family, Animation & Sports Marketing.

It’s been a while since we’ve heard anything about a possible film adaptation of Brian K. Vaughan’s “Y: The Last Man.” First news of the film adaptation broke back in 2008 when director D.J. Caruso spoke of casting Shia LaBeouf as the story’s protagonist, Yorrick Brown. But with a script written by Vaughan himself, pre-production for Caruso become rather slow and Shia LaBeouf’s involvement with the film became an on-again, off-again uncertainty.

Recently, MTV News caught up with D.J. Caruso on the set of his upcoming film and got a small update on the status of “Y: The Last Man.”

“It’s still in active development at New Line. I’m still kind of loosely attached. We’ve taken about four cracks at the screenplay. It’s been a really tough one, only because there’s so much that you cover and trying to narrow it down is a problem.”

He went on to point out that differing beliefs on the breakdown of the story had a lot to do with the film’s stalled status. Caruso’s vision of the film(s) is that of a three-part saga. However, this has clashed with the studio’s solo film plans.

Caruso states,

“My problem that I have with New Line is, they’re good people, but I felt you had to make this film as a trilogy,” he said. “I felt that you really had to deal with books one through four on their own. And I think there was a different philosophy there. They really wanted to cover a lot more ground in one film, which I didn’t think would make for a great movie. I thought you’d be cramming too much into one movie. So that’s where we left off,” continued Caruso. “Maybe when I get back from shooting ‘I Am Number Four’ we’ll try to get back into it. I really do love that project, so I hope we can make something work out. That’s been the problem. I think we’ve all felt the same frustration about it.”

For those unfamiliar with the series, “Y: The Last Man” follows the adventures of magician Yorrick Brown who is the last human male on Earth after something kills every organism with a Y chromosome, expect for Yorrick and his pet monkey, Ampersand.

I hope that the film can get back into development soon and get made (hopefully into Caruso’s planned trilogy). ”Y: The Last Man” is a great comic series and would make for an amazing film series as well.

BBC News has learned some of the filming locations for director Joe Johnston’s “Captain America: The First Avenger” coming July 22nd, 2011.

(Caution, spoilers ahead!)

According to the BBC News, Marvel will be taking over part of Manchester and Liverpool throughout filming of “Captain America: The First Avenger”. The producers chose the Northern Quarter of Manchester for its “towering buildings and pre-war architecture”. Manchester will serve as the base location to recreate a 1940s New York City and will feature a “dramatic car chase”. You may remember that Manchester was transformed into a Victorian era London for last year’s Sherlock Holmes. The nature of the sequence or sequences to be filmed at the Stanley Dock in Liverpool are to be determined.

The first “Green Lantern” film doesn’t even come out until next June, but news on on “Green Lantern 2″ is already being released. Earlier this summer, news broke that the screenwriting team for the first “Green Lantern” film had already signed a deal to write treatments for both a “Green Lantern 2″ as well as “The Flash”.

The latest rumor from Collider Magazine seems to confirm that the screenwriting trio have already moved into the early planning stages for “The Flash” movie. When questioned by Collider as to when “The Flash” would be happening, Berlanti replied:

“We’re just getting into the script. We’re just starting the script, so that’s about where we’re at.”

Berlanti also talked about laying the ground work for a possible”Green Lantern” sequel during the scripting of the first movie:

“We actually treated “Green Lantern” a lot like the first year of a series,” related Berlanti. “When we did the first movie, just because we did want to lay stuff out, to deal with the mythology in that way. Writing for series helped us in that, in terms of thinking about stuff as just the beginning, but also part of a chapter, as much as anything else.”

To throw my opinion out there, since Ryan Reynolds is already playing Green Lantern and Deadpool, I’d love to see Neil Patrick Harris take on the role of The Flash. He already voiced the role in “Justice League: The New Frontier” as the Barry Allen version of The Flash, but I think he could take on a live action version of the character as well. What do you think?
