Over the weekend, screenwriter Tom Mankiewicz passed away at the age of 68. Mankiewicz was the writer on both “Superman” and “Superman II” and received an Academy Award for co-writing “Citizen Kane”. During the 1970s, Richard Donner picked Mankiewicz to rewrite the script for “Superman”. While the screenwriting credit for “Superman” ultimately went to Mario Puzo, Richard Donner was persistant in saying that Mankiewicz was the driving force behind the movie’s heroic and legendary feel. Mankiewicz would get the proper credit he deserved on the release of “Superman II: The Richard Donner Cut”. The writer passed away July 31 at his residence in Los Angeles, CA.
